General Information:
Sediment interceptors (traps) have been used successfully in thousands of institutional, industrial and commercial drainage systems, as practical devices for preventing solids from entering the drain, waste and vent (DWV) piping systems. Without the use of such interceptors, solids that may enter the drainage piping system (e.g., plaster, clay, hair, jewelry, metals, plastics, papers, stones, fibers, etc.), would interfere with normal effluent drainage or sewage treatment and cause costly pipeline stoppages or loss of valuable materials. As a result, most state and local plumbing and environmental codes now call for the installation of sediment interceptors for improved drainage and pollution control.
T&C rigid-plastic interceptors are superior to cast iron, steel or aluminum interceptors in many ways. As an example of their superiority, T&C interceptors are completely manufactured (inside and outside) of acid-resistant materials. Metal interceptors require special, costly coatings and/or treatments to be rendered acid or corrosion resistant. T&C interceptors also can come with optional union connections at the inlet and outlet fittings - this allows the interceptors are much lighter in weight, larger in capacity, easier to install, easier to maintain, won't rust, etc. as compared to metal interceptors.
Construction:
T&C sediment interceptors come standard as cylindrical shapes with integral flanges on top; each interceptor comes complete with gasketing, matching cover with nuts and bolts, threaded inlet and outlet fitting connections and removable basket unit with removable perforated baffles. All components are constructed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), virgin polyolefin, rigid-plastic materials. This HDPE material features excellent properties, such as high temperature resistance, high chemical resistance, good rigidity, superior strength, low cost, etc. the HDPE polyolefin materials used by T&C conform to ASTM material specification D1248-70. Black color is added for ultraviolet (UV) resistance. The standard threaded fitting connections (inlets and outlets) permit the interceptors to be adapted to any pipping system (e.g., plastic, cast iron, galvanized, brass or glass piping). The T&C optional union connections at each inlet and outlet eliminates the need for additional space above the interceptor (as required by metal interceptors) in order to remove the sediment basket, for maintenance purposes.
MAINTENANCE
Sediment baskets must be inspected periodically for possible maintenance. The interceptor housing basket and baffles should be thoroughly cleaned for optimum service. Typically, each interceptor should be inspected once a month. However, inspection and cleaning should be increased or decreased based upon system usage, flow rate and waste composition and quantity. The removable cover, removable basket and removable screens make it easy to inspect and clean T & C sediment interceptors.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
There are numerous applications for T & C sediment interceptors in all kinds of industrial, institutional, foodservice and commercial installations. Here are a few typical applications: restaurants (fish scales, food solids, ect.) dental labs, art rooms and earth science rooms in schools, emergency rooms (plaster casts) in hospitals, metallurgical labs, beauty & haircutting parlors, jewelry shops, doctor and dentist offices, manufacturing plants, chemical plants, warehouses, laundries, glass boiling plants, automobile service stations, ect.
HOW TO SPECIFY:
Contractor shall furnish and install T & C polyolefin, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic sediment interceptor(s) as indicated by model number and/or size on contract drawings. Contractor shall supply any adapters to tie interceptor(s) into drain, waste and vent piping system. All piping connected to interceptor(s) should be properly supported to prevent unnecessary stress at inlet and outlet connections. Teflon™ tape should be used on inlet and outlet threaded fittings. Interceptor(s) should be installed on a solid, level foundation or support. Entire system shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, the local plumbing code and goodworkmanlike practices. Teflon is a product of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Contractor to also provide T&C PP unions.
IMPORTANT PRICING INFORMATION:
All prices are F.O.B. Matawan, NJ. Allow 2-4 weeks for shipment of interceptors. (T&C products are warranted against manufacturing defects in workmanship or materials.)
Larger interceptors and special sizes or shapes are available upon request. Although fitting connections may be located anywhere on T&C interceptors, see below table for standard centerlines. Flanged connections and special adaptors are available upon request.
